JEDDAH, June 2: The General Presidency for the Affairs of the Grand Mosque and the Prophet's Mosque has activated the world’s largest cooling system, with a capacity of 155,000 tons of refrigeration, to ensure a safe and comfortable environment for millions of pilgrims ahead of the Hajj season.
According to a statement from the Saudi Press Agency (SPA), the system is part of extensive preparations aimed at improving the pilgrim experience and ensuring comfort during periods of extreme heat.
The Presidency said it is conducting continuous maintenance, replacing parts, securing work areas, and managing resources to meet the high operational demands of the season and support long-term service sustainability.
The Grand Mosque relies on two main cooling stations: Al-Shamiyah, with 120,000 tons of capacity, and Ajyad, with 35,000 tons, covering the mosque's expanded areas.
Temperatures are maintained between 22 and 24 degrees Celsius using advanced air purification systems that remove 95 percent of impurities, ensuring clean air for worshippers.
